Cultural and Social Justice Education

Mission 3:

Summer camps allow children to learn about important social values through creative expression. These camps have been around since 1990, and continue to the present day.

In 1990, Adhika launched various summer camps to allow Filipino students to be immersed in their culture and heritage. Through a series of workshops, activities and games led by volunteers, students bonded with one another while learning about their history. The camps also sought to shed light on important issues ignored by the mainstream education system, including the prevalence of anti-Asian racism and violence against women.

The workshops continue to exist in a meaningful capacity today, reaching not just students, but communities as a whole. In 2019, Adhika, with Filipinas Speak Out organized sexual assault awareness workshops for students in three universities in Toronto. Passionate about protecting the welfare of women, Adhika has also facilitated leadership training programs for Babae+, a support group for HIV positive women, and has donated significant funds to the Likhaan Women’s Health Centre to provide pre and postnatal care for women who could not afford health insurance.

Major Projects:

#ANDMETOO: Support for victims of workplace harassment

Adhika collaborated with the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic for the #andmetoo program in 2023. The Schlifer Clinic provides training for women to access support and recourse from workplace violence. With a particular focus on individuals working in the hospitality and service industries, the Schlifer Clinic seeks to provide women with the legal education and awareness needed to recognize and report instances of harassment.

Specifically within the workplace, women continue to face harassment and violence of every form on a continual basis, and may not be equipped with the tools necessary to access recourse and safety. The risks of this only heighten for women of colour, who face the additional barriers of racial discrimination that complicate their ability to seek justice.

Support victims of workplace violence today through making a donation through our website.
